Locals only rules from the 2005 Rural Housing Guidelines will remain in place until further notice.
The rules prevent people without proven ties to the local community to get Planning Permission on a greenfield site. This is a policy that in the past has led to the European Union taking legal proceedings against Ireland in 2007.
The infringement case is still open and only last year the Irish authorities told the Commission of their intention to review the rules. As soon as the new rules are brought to the attention of the Commission, the Commission services will assess them and decide on the next step to take.
This means that revised guidelines for the local authorities are unlikely to come to light until 2018.
